scuse me.... what am I actually doing with these " curves"? I know I'm doing something with the colour, not sure what though :(

the curve line basically depicts the levels of the value, red, green, or blue, depending on which is selected. if you manipulate the red curve at the top, and push it upward, it will increase the amount of red in the highlights of the image. pushing it down will decrease the amount of red in the highlights. for a cross process effect, the red and green in the highlights is pushed up and it is pushed down in the lower values. the blue is increased in the shadows and taken out of the highlights.

when i push down what bit do I lower on the little line? The top, bottom or the middle bit?

on the blue, the top is pushed down. on red and green, the bottom is pushed down.
